Aid to disaster-struck Haiti
A couple of days ago, the Republic of Haiti was rocked by an earthquake measuring more than 7.0 on the Richter scale – the worst to hit the region for 200 years. The destruction has been enormous, and poverty-stricken Haiti is in great distress. It is estimated that almost 100,000 have died, and the search continues for survivors who may be lying trapped amongst the rubble and the remains of houses.
The capital, Port-au-Prince is today a city in ruins. Many large buildings have collapsed, including the Presidential Palace, the National Assembly building and the great Port-au-Prince Cathedral. In addition, the United Nation’s headquarters in Haiti – its Stabilization Mission, located in the capital – has collapsed and it is feared that up to 100 UN personnel may have lost their lives.
“It’s impossible to fully understand the horror the citizens of Haiti are experiencing at the present moment”, says Pastor Ulf Ekman.
“This is an incomprehensible tragedy, well beyond our ability to understand. Words fail me! Right now, urgent assistance is needed to help remedy the situation where survivors can be dug out and the injured can received care.”
Help for the needy
Several churches and aid organisations have already begun gathering in contributions to help those in distress. Word of Life will take part in this, and will be taking up a special collection in aid of Haiti during next Sunday’s morning meeting. The money will be distributed through the aid organisation, Hoppets Stjärna (The Star of Hope), which is active in the area.
“It’s important that believers all over the world pray for this situation and that we do something concrete as well”, Ulf points out.
